I had my students watch Blind Mountain after having read and discussed "No Name Woman" by Maxine Hong Kingston. The film is rather harsh precisely because it deals with the harsh reality of violations of human rights of women in China and the repercussions of the "One Child" policy. After viewing the film, students were able to relate to the issues discussed in Kingston's writings at a more personal level. They were able to see the context of homosocial bonds between men and the abuse of women perpetrated and perpetuated by other women in male-dominated societies. They were very disappointed with the ending though. I suppose they're used to the happy Hollywood endings. I strongly recommend this film, it makes you THINK about this crazy world we live in!!
