12th grade Modern Literature students will learn about the role of artists and writers as commentators of their society. Also, students will learn about the Edo period woodblock prints and contemporary Japanese art and photography. Ultimately, as they read, analyze, and write about the theme of the short story by the Japanese author, Haruki Murakami, students will reflect on the images of the artists they studied.

Manzanar final project: Students will read about the internment of Japanese /American citizens at Manzanar and the long-term effects of the prejudices and ultimate repayment of retribution after the war. The contribution of Japanese citizens was lost after the war ended. Though money was payed, the overall effect of prejudice and type casting and racial profiling damage was permanent. After reading the text, students will compare the rhetorical and factual information given to the American public and write a counter claim argument in defense of Japanese/Americans.
