My name is Al, and I currently teach English 10: World Literature at a small social justice charter school in the Lincoln Heights area of East L.A. Other than English 10, I have taught Journalism and Speech & Debate. I started the Speech & Debate program mainly because I feel that debate/forensics is not coming back to the urban areas where budget cuts have curtailed such curriculum.

I have a personal connection to Japan and East Asia that does not make its way into my curriculum, and thus I am taking this course. Currently, the only part of the curriculum that touches on anything related to Japan is during the World War II unit. I have tried to introduce more Japanese poetry into my other units for thematic purposes. I am hoping that this course will give me additional foresight into curriculum planning.

After graduating college, I moved to New York City where I would eventually work at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations as a researcher for the Japanese ambassador. After September 11, 2001, I decided to leave New York and take part in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET). I lived in Owase-shi, Mie-ken for two years teaching ESL in public junior high schools. After returning to the U.S., I received a job as a staff writer/researcher for the Yomiuri Shimbun in the Washington, D.C. bureau. When I left journalism to move back to California, I decided I wanted to go to grad school and become a full-time teacher.

My name is Ivett and I teach Spanish at a Catholic private school in San Pedro. One of my assignments is AP Spanish Language and Culture and within that class we talk about Chinese, Japanese and Korean influence in the Spanish speaking world. I attended the previous seminar “USC Fall 2015 - East Asia Since 1900” and found it fascinating. I am back to keep on learning!

My name is Nikole, I teach 6th and 7th grade social studies at a public middle school in Monrovia. I am so excited to start this adventure, the topics we are going to cover directly correlate with the content that I cover in class. We focus a lot on the use of primary source documents and analyzing of these documents in class, I am also the technology coordinator at our site, so a lot of my lessons focus on using technology. I am very interested in taking this class because the class completely compliments my class and curriculum but also because I am completely fascinated with East Asia. I focused on this area during my undergraduate course work. I love learning and I can not wait to start this experience.

    Hola,

My name is Monica. I'm a second grade teacher in a West Covina charter school. I'm excited to have the opportunity to participate in this seminar. It's been over 10 years since I've stepped foot onto a university campus as a student. This is sure to be a great adventure. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in person on Monday.

Hello! My name is Samantha. I am so excited to meet everyone and get this class started! I always enjoyed history and social studies personally as a student and enjoy educating my students in History and Social Studies as well. I currently teach Kindergarten at Westside Global Awareness Magnet School in Marina del Rey. I love the theme of my school, as it helps set students up to be globally conscious and aware future citizens. This is my tenth year teaching elementary school. I have mostly taught Kindergarten for the duration of my career, however have dabbled in 1st, 4th, and 5th grades as well. In addition to teaching, I started an ASL (American Sign Language) Club for students on campus as well as tutor middle schoolers in History and English after school. I am very involved at LMU (where I obtained my MA in Education a few years ago) and currently run an honors society called Kappa Delta Pi and am on the School of Education Alumni Association Board of Directors. As you can see, I like to be busy! I am very much looking forward to participating in this course and meeting you all very soon!

My name is Natalí and I am a social science teacher with YouthBuild Charter School. I teach 10th grade World History, 11th grade US history, 12th grade Economics/Government, and an art elective. I have a love for empowering young people, social justice, learning, and traveling which makes teaching enjoyable and fulfilling. What brings me to this seminar is my interest in helping to transform my students into socially conscious global citizens. I just also participated in the seminar from last fall, and I really enjoyed it as an intellectual pursuit. I have also been lucky enough to do some traveling in Asia (China, India, and hopefully Japan this upcoming summer). I am excited to learn more about the region, and to connect with all of you.

    Cheers!

Hello my name is Cecilia Seman, and I currently teach 2nd grade in the Baldwin Park Unified School District. I teach all subjects; however, the majority of my teaching career has been in upper grades. In particular, during the time I taught 6th grade, I truly enjoyed teaching the ancient civilizations. My husband lived in Monterey Park practically his whole life. So when I got married that's where we first lived during our first 15 years of marriage. It fascinated me how this city has changed. My two daughters grew up there and embraced the Chinese culture. I am looking forward to learning more about Asia and getting to know all of you.
