Created in 2002 and hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Visualizing Cultures is an educational website for historical images focused on East Asia. Chalk full of images, and curricula that includes units, lesson plans, and essays written by academics that can be adapted for secondary classrooms. Units are organized by nation with Japan and China with the most units. There is a unit regarding the Philippines from the colonial perspective, but for the most part Japan and China unit are predominate.
They are not traditional "units" from a classroom teacher's perspective, but should be easily adapted. For instance, teachers can plan a unit of study that includes the expert essay as a primary document with the visual portion for analysis purposes. Teachers can use the visuals and have students analyze the visuals using the See-Mean-Matter method of visual analysis or the OPTIC method of visual analysis.
