GuestMy name is Mayra Alvarenga. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I have been working for LAUSD since 2000. Most of my time has been spent working with 6th and 8th grade students. I taught 3rd grade one year, but my comfort zone is middle school. I am currently teaching a self-contained 6th grade class at Sutter Middle School. I teach all subject: math, science, English, and history. I have a Masters in Education. Most of my travel experience has taken place in the U.S and Canada. As part of a study tour this summer, I was able to add Taipei, Tainan and Northeast China: Beijing, Shenyang, Changchun, and Harbin to my list.

GuestHi -- I'm Mark Gozonsky, I teach English at Grand Arts HS in downtown LA. I've been a high school teacher for five years and taught elementary before that. My teaching career has largely been a means for me to tag along for the ride as my twin daughters grew up. For the past two summers I've taught at UCLA's summer early academic outreach program, so that sorta keeps pace with them as they head into their senior year of college. Fortunately I got an MFA in Creative Writing last summer so that buys me some post-grad time, although there is always the option of letting go, which I think is probably a good choice. Meanwhile, about my participation in this program: I have been aware for a while now that I am 0-for-Asia in my lifetime, not such a good stat for a supposedly open-minded person. So this seminar is a step in the direction of being a more informed world citizen, and of course bringing what I learn from the adventure back to the classroom.

GuestHi, my name is Scott Craig and I have been teaching history at Sylmar High School for the last two years. Before moving to LA I taught history in Las Vegas for 20 years. Even though I have been teaching world history for almost 25 years (wow! that makes me feel OLD) I still need to learn a lot more about Asia to improve my teaching. I've loved living in LA and have really enjoyed hiking around Griffith Park this summer - the picture is one I took on one of my hikes.

GuestHi, I'm Mary Nakaya, and I teach art at ArTES High School in San Fernando. I grew up on a cattle ranch in Southern Utah and moved to Los Angeles to attend art school. This year will be my 9th year teaching art and it never gets old. This summer my husband and I backpacked Europe. Here is a picture of Manarola, the Italian village that captured my heart.
