I saw a performance by them a few years back in Pasadena. I was with a friend who is trained in classical Chinese dance, and it was interesting to hear her perspective on the pieces. Not sure I'd need to see it a second time, though I'm sure you would enjoy it.

The Shen Yun performances have received good reviews. It's worth noting, though, that the group is sponsored by Falungong, a religious/health organization.

The Chinese government has declared Falungong a cult and has actively and sometimes brutally suppressed it since 1999. Here's the government's anti-FLG website: http://www.facts.org.cn/. It includes a couple of articles concerning the Shen Yun performances.

In Australia earlier this year, it seems the Chinese authorities sought to discourage schools from taking classes to performances: http://www.crikey.com.au/2011/02/23/theatre-group-raises-questions-about-chinese-consulate-intimidating-schools/.

Here are some FLG articles about Shen Yun, including showing a dvd version of the performance in rural China. http://clearwisdom.net/html/articles/2011/7/8/126576.html

    Expect an impressive show.

    Cathie,

I really had no interest in this performance until I took this class-- I am now interested --how is it a religious/health program?? sounds like a plan.

    Pat,

Falungong, the oragnization itself is a religious/health program, not the performance. In China, Falungong is one the taboos you would want to look into.

At the performance I attended a few years back, there was some pretty heavy solicitation of the audience during the breaks. Not so much of me, but more so of my (Asian) friend, who explained to me what was going on since she understood what people were saying. The dancing, however, was worth seeing.

The reviews are raving, "It's 5,000 years of history in two hours of performance" _ Wall Street Journal

I happen to run across this, the dates are Jan. 13-14, 2012? maybe we can go as a group? Who's interested?
