Zatoichi is a true master and one of my faves.
However, there is also something to be said for the plethora of wicked, oddly entertaining B Kung Fu films: Kung Fu Zombies, Kung Fu Gorillas and Crippled Kung Fu- must be seen to be believed but don't expect any political correctness. How a chimpanzee-assisted armless man and a legless buddy can wipe out an entire village is miraculous indeed. Interestingly, rather than living a life of begging, like our freeway onramp decor, these men are quite capable of taking care of themselves- a positive treatment/message perhaps that isn't found in our culture. Jungle Video on Lincoln Blvd, Venice, has a supreme selection.
And lets not forget the many classic ripoffs of Asian gems- The Good, Bad & Ugly, from the Seven Samaurai, Tarantino's attempts at John Woo, and The Grudge.
Did anyone see China's The Bath House? Love the streetside, coinoperated, auotmated city showerstall (with car-wash style blow dry) contrasted with the traditonal village bath house culture- RIP for mall progress. A must see.
P.S. The flying guillotine rules.
