The state-run Korea Broadcasting System has been deliberating on their decision to increase subscription fee. It is interesting to read about how the KBS president Jung Yun-joo explains the decision. He says that in order to make a certain level of profit, the increase in subscription fee is necessary. Also, another adjustment is the cutting of employees' fee. Many oppose to these changes, and unsurprisingly, the labor union has things to say against the changes as well. It is rather unusual that the network blatantly explain their decisions, placing everything on the basis of wanting to maintain a certain level of profits. It makes me wonder whether they are not afraid of reactions and certain consequences like viewers' withdrawal of subscriptions. Would not the demand for the channel decrease if its fees increae? Perhaps I don't know enough about how much influence KBS has in Korea. Would the increase in fees just be normally accepted eventually, despite current opposition, because it is such a big and prominent network? I wonder if these adjustments will be carried out.
