I'm trying to post a photo using my phone and I'm not having much luck. Is anyone else having that problem?
This photo is a model of the Mukden Prisoner of War (POW) camp in Shenyang, China, where the treatment by the Japanese was fairly typical of all their POW camps. During WWII, Japan maintained over 200 POW camps throughout the occupied area: China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
Here's a photo from Shenyang that I like. Zhongshan Square, Mao statue, and the dancing masses. Below are links to relevant resources on the location.
Long Live the Victory of Mao Zedong Thought, Wikipedia page on the giant sculpture at the center of the square:

A 1989 NY Times article about Shenyang:

(The reporter, Nick Kristof, is now a columnist for the Times and is featured in our Assignment:China segment on the 1989 Tiananmen square demonstrations and repression.)
A 2011 article about Shenyang becoming more environmentally friendly (the author is a friend of mine who now writes for BusinessWeek, the McKinsey fellow she interviews is a USC grad and institute supporter):

I absolutely LOVEd the experience on the Great Wall. I will be able to share this experience with my students & I know it will spark interest & psssibly make them want to visit the wall someday as well.
So here's the link to some of my pictures from the great wall. Plus one is a video, the one that looks blurry & has a white arrow at the top of the right hand corner, just click on that one and you will get a little snip of what it looked like going down the "chute" of the great wall

I have been reading and hearing about Tiananmen Square since I was in jr. high. It always seemed like a forbidden place (even though it was located next to the forbidden city!). I always imagined that I would be arrested if I stepped foot on that place so being there in person and seeing the giant Mao portrait was an absolute surreal moment. I could have stayed there for hours (under an umbrella) and just stared at all the sights. It was an absolutely surreal moment in my life.
One of the best nights on the trip, and Clay didn't think we could do it! (it did help that the Ambassador Hotel was labelled on the exit sign).
Emily - thanks for posting this wonderful evidence of you and your pals resourcefulness. I'm glad you folks explored a bit and I hope everyone finds a way to go back to China and Taiwan and taking advantage of mass transit.
China is a complex place with such a varied history. I thought it was interesting to visit the new synagogue and the museum to the Jewish population in Harbin. It adds complexity to an already complex picture of the Jewish diaspora. It was fascinating to connect European history to Chinese history. It will make for a great connection in Modern World History.
