In last months "News Weekly" there was a small article on how in China they dont want parents to find the sex of the baby before he/she is born. They want to stop parents from performing extreme measures to ensure the sex they want. In the article they said doctors are now winking a certain amount of times if the baby is a boy and a certain amount if it is a girl. They also discussed that the ratio of men to women is growing.

    hey there!

since the Chinese have instituted the one child per couple law to alleviate the exponential population growth, there have been many ramifications other than the stabilizing of population. those effects: the attempt to control the actions of parents who want a baby boy, the rising ratio of men to women, the intentional abortion of female fetuses, etc have been/are tolerated because the population is not growing as fast. it's sad, but it works. they, the Chinese believe that the quality of life is being preserved; they won't run out of resources as quickly.

I saw in a documentarysome years back that the pressure to 'abort' a second child is applied relentlessly, through continuous parental harassmet, even in the eighth month of pregnancy. It's very different from having a debate over when the fetus is considered human, it was all framed in terms of good citizenship, duty. Very Confucian!
The pressure is applied by the town anti-midwife (my term), who gives out birth control and collects rumors regarding who might be pregnant... the case highlighted the woman was able to hide her second pregnancy a long time because it was winter. The couple finally "aborted" in the eighth month.
