KeymasterTo all those in the Survey Assignment Group,
I have composed five questions for the survey. May I suggest, that if anyone else has composed any questions that we could meet twenty to thirty minutes before class on Tuesday to share and select the five questions for the survey. We might be able to get this part of the assignment out of the way. We can also select our target group for the survey.
See you!

GuestI'll try to arrive before class, but this might be a good place to share those initial questions anyway. I would like to ask my students at my school to 1) Give five words that come to mind when they hear the word "Asia." 2) Write a sentence about why that word surfaced. 3) Draw a picture that illustrates the idea behind that word. 4) Explain what Asia has in common with the rest of the world.

SpectatorThe survey team may wish to narrow its focus to East Asia, though one aim might be to gain a sense of what survey subjects think of when they hear the word Asia.
For Asian views, please take a look at results of the Pew Center for People and the Press:

Guesteshorer: I enjoyed reading your questions and especially liked the 3rd task, “Draw a picture that illustrates the idea behind that word.” If students first draw a picture that represents some aspect of their topic before they write, this activity seems to help them bring focus to their writing.
Brandon: I did not see your posting until after the Tuesday meeting . Can we meet before the Saturday meeting to do as you suggest?

GuestSorry, I didn't see these postings earlier. But using the internet in this manner is new to me. And I usually only go on line once a week.
Tuesday, we actually had Department meetings after school. Our social studies teachers agreed to participate in the study.
Some of the questions I would like to ask them are:
1. What countries would you include in East Asia?
a. China, Japan
b. China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam
c. India, China, Thailand
d. None of the above2. What grade level do you teach?
a. 6th Grade
b. 7th Grade
c. 8th Grade3. Do you think the California Curriculum Standards properly address East Asia?
a. Yes
b. No
c. Don't know4. Do you think there is any reason to include the study of East Asia in Middle Schools?
a. Yes
b. No
c. Don't know5. If your answer was a or b in Question #4, please explain your answer below.
Please post other suggestions for questions, and let me know what you think.
Thanks.

GuestIt looks like we're going in two directions: A survey for students, and a survey for teachers. Do you think there's any problem with doing both (and more, if other participants wish to go in other directions)? We could each do our surveys, or pair up if we choose to share questions, and post all survey results on a "Survey" homepage. Sound feasible? No promises about getting there early on Saturday. It's a long day as it is...

GuestThe questions are all good ones, but as I am "off-track" now, I will be able to survey neither students nor teachers. I was thinking of general questions about attitudes and beliefs that Americans might currently hold about East Asia that we could informally send out to our email lists of family and friends. I also like the most recent suggestion that we each conduct our own mini surveys and report them collectively.

GuestI went a little crazy on some survey questions. Here is a sample.
1. Many countries in Asia experience economic and political difficulties, which cause their populations to immigrate to other countries in search of a more prosperous and free existence. In the future which country will have and most and which will have the least number of potential immigrants. Of all the countries in Asia, which country’s immigrants would you most welcome, and which the least?
2. A major corporation is interested in promoting a teacher exchange between the United States and any country in Asia. For one year you can teach in any country of your choosing. Your US salary will continue at the same level as well as all benefits. Travel for you and your family will be included. Your present job will be held open until your return. Which country would you favor the most, and which the least?
3. You’re in the witness protection program. Your safety requires you to leave the United States forever and find refuge in any Asian country. Which country would you choose for your new identity and permanent residence?
4. Which country in Asia would be the most likely and which would be the least likely to harbor and nurture terrorist activity against the United States?
5. You are convinced that the only possible spouse for you is to be found in Asia. Which country catches your eye? Which country is the least attractive in your mind?
6. The government is planning to 5 billion dollars in economic aid to a favored country in Asia. Which country will use this money most effectively? Which country would just waste the money?

GuestI like Catherine's questions better than mine. So I am proposing that we use her questions and survey both teachers and people in general (neighbors, friends and family) and compare the results from the two groups to see if any conclusions can be drawn about the level of understanding?
What do you think?

GuestI think we need to clarify with Clay whether or not we can come up with separate surveys, or if he is wanting one for our entire make-up group. I think we have a number of good ideas here, but the direction will depend on his desire. We'll find out in hour or so.

GuestI was waiting to get Catherine's material this morning. But maybe she is busy. So I've finished the survey page as follows:
EAST ASIA SURVEY I am taking a course from the UCLA/Asia Institute. Thank you for agreeing to answer the questions in this very short survey. For the purposes of this survey East Asia includes China, Japan and Korea.
This is an anonymous survey. But we would like to know the following:
Occupation: ____________(If a teacher, what subject?) _______________
Age: _______
Were you born in the United States? ________
PLEASE CIRCLE THE ANSWER THAT EXPRESSES YOUR VIEW. (Catherine's questions would go here.)
Hope everyone can respond today, because I want to do my survey Monday.
Thanks.
Lynne

GuestHere is the text from an email that I sent out to survey group members except for Lynne and Magda, whose email addresses I was not able to locate. But I just realized that I can attach the file to this Forum response. See file attachment for survey. Let me know if you can't open it for some reason.
Catherine
Greetings -
I put together the survey in a Word file (see attached) that you can print out and distribute on hard copy or by email. If we collect results from 10 people each, that would give us a nice survey sample of around 60 people. How about a deadline of Tuesday, May 25, our next class meeting?
Does anyone know Magda or Lynne's email addresses?
Thanks,

GuestThanks for posting the Survey. I'll begin surveying tomorrow. I want to fool around a bit with trying to include an Excel spreadsheet rather than a chart for us to report our findings. Or do you want to just bring our results, and one of us put them into the chart? I'm thinking something simple like:
"Teachers: 5 Favorable, 4 Unfavorable, 1 Unsure" With that info, I can put the webpage together easily enough. Other ideas? Concerns?May 17, 2004 at 6:36 am #33613Anonymous
