    I wonder how much the translation of the various fiction/folktale pieces has to do with my reception. We all know the stereotype of the inscrutable Asian, but I found the fiction hard to read. Hard to find the "voice" of the author. The parallels to the lectures are clear enough and the content is interesting, but there is not the sense of author..this is missing to me. Rebecca

    The stories as a whole have a certain remoteness, not to say foreign. Is this the key to "Asian" voice or is it's tone "lost in translation"?[Edit by="rmansdorf on Aug 5, 4:01:06 PM"][/Edit]

    I agree with you. There are syntax rules that are totally different. For instance, my native Korean language does not contain any definite articles so Western speakers might be more likely to be confused

    I also agree. Of course, the best translators are those who speak a language "idiomatically," but I don't think that even the best translator could catch the "voice" of an author. I was especially stupified by the hitech marriage reading.
