I enjoyed the DVD, "Eating the Scorpion" about American teachers who go on a study tour to China. Being Asian, I already knew that Asians eat "weird" things because I grew up seeing my dad eat "weird" things. I wasn't prepared for all of the things that I saw that the Chinese buy and eat in the dry market. It really made me stop and think about how easy it is to develop misconceptions. Another misconception that I had was that the Chinese don't value their girls and that women in China don't have any opportunities. There was a scene in the DVD where a local Chinese man is discussing how much it costs to raise a daughter. He mentions piano lessons. In another scene, a young girl is playing piano beautifully. People who don't value girls are not going to waste their money on piano lessons. A group of older teenage Chinese girls are seen talking to one of the American teachers. He asked them what they wanted to do with their lives. One of them mentioned that she would like to teach poor children because they do not have the same opportunities for a good life as everybody else.

It was also interesting to witness how the teachers used their experiences in China once they returned to the U.S. I liked how Wanda bought Chinese clothes for her students to try on and how she used the incense to teach about Buddhism. The enthusiasm that the teachers were able to communicate because of their first hand accounts about Chinese culture was obviously contagious --as witnessed in the eyes of their students.

Thanks, Mia, for this review. Please also note the recent LA Times article about China's piano craze:

    This picture is especially interesting:

I really enjoyed the "Eating the Scorpion" DVD. It was interesting to see the experiences of the teaches and how they used the trip to bring China alive in their classrooms. I love the idea of showing the students how to perform Tai-chi and the proper way to use incense. The teacher who used her personal pictures and asked the students write a desciption of what is happening in the picture is a terrific way to not only work on their writing, but also to learn all about the different aspects of China.

In addition, the observation about the daughter who played the piano is dead on. If women were not valued in Chinese society, they would not be taught to play the piano. Hopefully, the stereotype of only men being valued will disapear. It was encouraging to see the female students wanting to go to college and on to professional careers.
