Hi!
My name is Louis Harley and I teach at Palos Verdes High. My login name is "lharris" but it really should be "lharley". I guess Harris is close to Harley? 😐
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this seminar. 😀 I'm new to the PVP district. I taught before at North High in Torrance for 8 years. I now teach A.P. government, regular government and U.S. History. In the past, I've also taught economics and several tech classes like computer networking and computer applications.

Hi Louis--

I'm impressed - the first to post from our group, not only an introduction but a philosophy choice as well. Extra credit for you.

Welcome to PVP. My name is Malynn Hogan, and I've been here for 11 years (teaching anyway). I love teaching here and wish you the best as well. I teach math and ancient world history but was a U.S. history major in college.

I must admit that my philosophical tendencies go more toward Confucianism, not wanting to believe that we are all by nature evil, like legalism would lead us to believe. Perhaps, though, the Han dynasty had it right when they sought to combine the two. However, that discussion is for another time.

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know everyone better.

Hi Malyn and Louis,
I am not sure if I am posting correctly. I wanted to reply to both of you at once. I teach at Ridgecrest and know Malyn because we taught together. I am looking forward to getting to know you beter Louis. Hope you are enjoying PV HIgh. I went there as a freshman a long time ago!!! Now I teach 6 & 7 grade. I am looking forward to our intellectual journey to China and hopefully really physically being there! I too think I am leaning toward Confucius. The other philosophies are a little abstract for me and legalism much too harsh. I started reading last night. Maybe I will change my mind after a little more study. For now I would like to debate on Malyn's side. Have a good week.

Hi everyone

I am excited to embark on this journey with you all! I know this program was designed for teachers, but I am a counselor at PV High, so I am planning to incorporate this program into our counseling curriculum. We offer Chinese and Japanese at PV High, and many of our students are interested in traveling and one day working in Asian cultures. On Saturday I will be debating with the Moist school of thought, but also loyal to the Legalists out there!

HI Louis it was fun debating the merits of legalism on Saturday. Although I don't really believe that legalism is the best form of government we did a good job of supporting our position. As we discussed legalism you pointed out that many regimes in the 20 century can be compared to the legalist tradition, especially Nazi Germany. I also thought about the Cultural Revolution and the comparisons that can be made. I look forward to continuing our journey together through China's history and trying to make what we learn relevant to our students.

Hello...

And, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed arguing (or miming!) the Daoist side of the coin. We Daoists were obligated not to explain anything because according to that philosophy, to explain it makes it cease being what it is. 🙂

Anyhow, the experience was a lot of fun.

Welcome and hello to my fellow colleagues! My name is Edessa Foster and I teach at PVIS 7th grade World History. I am enjoying getting to know many of you at our seminars. It is fun meeting people who teach elementary school and high school. I am enjoying broadening my knowledge of Asia. I especially look forward to studying about Asia today. Thank you to Professor Dube for finding such great guest speakers and the delicious treats!

Although we've spent so many Monday evenings and Saturdays together, I still feel like we don't really know each other. It sure would be nice to do some more 'get to know you' type things if we do end up going to China together. Might make things more fun.

I totally agree that we should get to know one another better. I do not even feel I know many people's names! I teach 6 & 7th grade history at Ridgecrest. I vote for a get together!

We really should try to get together before March 28th. Our sessions are so full of content, and sometimes I'm so burned-out after teaching, that I feel that there isn't any time to get to know each other. I would especially like to get tthe chance to talk more with the non-PV High teachers.

I totally agree with getting to know our traveling team! I went to Europe with Peninsula High back when I was a senior and one of the neatest things was that once a month we would meet at someone's house and learn about one of the places we were going to visit. Not only did we bond with each other but we also got pre-exposure to what we would be seeing and the importance of it all.

Louis,
I too think that it would be great if we were able to get to know eachother a little better. Like you I agree that we have a great deal of content and are all tired from job one and then the class and work associated with it. I read your note about discussion with non-PV High teachers... is there something that I could do? I think we could learn a great deal from one another on a 17 hour flight as well. Perhaps we could devise something productive during that time?

Harley,

I think it would be a good idea to get together too. I suggested something a few weeks ago (under Why Bother?). Clay responded, but no one else did. I think going out or having a family in thing would be great.
