Seeing the movie, "Quitting", today and observing the main character in his various outfits, I was reminded of the reading we had a few weeks ago where the man forced his son to wear 2-3 cm short shorts to school. The drug-addicted actor wears tight cut off shirts, jeans, and short shorts, something not seen too often in American men these days (although I have seen a few exceptions on campus). As others in the class commented, sometimes I couldn't tell if it was him or his sister. I am not very familiar with the fashions popular in Asia nowadays, but seeing my cousins in the winter, it seems that the men favor tight jeans and the women don't dress as girly as they do here. Are any of you familiar with fashion trends in Asia? How do they compare with the ones here?
I went to Japan two summers ago and I do think that the guys do not wear baggy pants like they do in America. However, I don't think that their pants are super tight (like in Quitting) either. I think girls dress somewhat similar to the way they do in America, with a few (well a lot) of twists. For instance, girls shirts mostly come in just one size (medium) except at big department stores and are often baggier. Also, I think that especially in Japan and big cities, girls are very fashionable and wear lots of different colors (rather than just jeans and a t-shirt or tank top). Also, girls dont wear sweatshirts much like they do in America.
From what I've observed from last summer: I think generally Japan is the trendsetter for fashion (and pop culture in general) for the rest of Asia. The stuff girls wear are girly but not as much as here. And they are still very aware of how much skin you show in public. Ex: I tried to wear just a tank top (cuz it's like over 100 degrees in China in July) and my aunt was like "you're gonna go out in public like that?! you have to wear a shirt or perverts will get you on the bus". But anyways, I think the guys wear similar stuff to what Asian guys wear here, but not as baggy and definitely not as tight as it was in the film.
When my sister came back from her visit in Vietnam last summer, she bought some clothes for our families as gifts. I got some shirts, and found their sizes to be pretty much uniform! It was hard to wear, since some were just too tight. The colors are somewhat bright in general and the designs are quite girly. Seeing that, I asked my sister if those were her only choices, but she said that the stores she visited only had those or similar items. She also said that girls do not typically wear jeans or t-shirts/sweatshirts, but jjust more feminine clothes. The clothes that she bought for my dad were less different from those seen here. So I guess it seems like there's a bigger difference (VN and here), in terms of size ranges and casual wear, in female clothing articles than males'.
I went to Taiwan this past spring break, and the fashion is definitely something I would not want to wear haha. Almost all the girls have the exact same haircut with the thin layers, and the extreme brown dye. A lot of times I see schoolboys and girls in their sweats uniforms, but if not, I see girls wearing clothes that don't match in color, and it is pretty baggy. The girls also wear those really pointy heels which I can't imagine are actually comfortable. The boys wear those white tanktop undershirts a lot with sandals and comfortable shorts. I don't see jeans very often at all with teenage boys. The jean and leather jacket that Jia Hongsheng wore throughout the movie does not seem in style nowadays. That was more early 90s, which is understandable since that was when the movie was made. The fashion trends are more European rather than American. When I went shopping in the Taipei 101, they had many stores such as Gucci, Coach, Cartier, FCUK, Chanel, and many other European brands for clothing. Definitely window shopping for me there. Actually I did not see any American brands in 101.
i actually prefer the fashion trends in japan and hongkong over the ones here... maybe i am biased because i am a fob but it is still no doubt that japan is known for being trend-setting... i remember how one year when i went back to hong kong, and everyone was wearing these striped rugby looking shirts cus it was really popular at the time... yah it took the trend like two years till it became a hit in the US... it seems that the fashion of Japan and other major Asian cities are always a step ahead of America's... i dunno i also think that the style in asia is more conservative... some people here wear too little clothes.... but i don't think that one has to be dressed in a revealing manner to be fashionable.... just look at the case of Japan fashion
I agree with Sally, the main character in the movie does have a peculiar fashion sense. I think his shorts were a little too short and some of his outfits were just plain random. I don't know if his fashion sense was a result of him being sick or not, but I wouldn't expect any guy here wearing anything remotely similar to the main character's outfits.
I am not familiar with the fashion trends in Asia, but from what I see in magazines, movies, etc., men living in Asia tend to wear tighter clothing....and their pants are not as baggy as some of the pants here.
