I just read up on an article talking about how China allowed two Taiwanese politicians to visit. "Soong, the second Taiwanese opposition leader to visit China within a month, met with Chinese President Hu Jintao on Thursday." This shows that China is softening up on its stance against Taiwan and is allowing for more political freedom. This is interesting because China is taking a side approach to "one china" policy. Since the hard military stance was ineffective before, it seems that China is willing to approach different politicians from Taiwan such as Soong and Lian.

Another interesting side fact is that Taiwan President Chen attacked Soong's visit and accused him of "selling out" the island's interests. Yet, where is his effective approach to proceed with this conflicting situation between Taiwan and China.

Overall, I applaud China's politcians for allowing Taiwanese politicians to visit. I think this approach greatly improves the relationship between the two "nations" and as long as they are willing to discuss the problems instead of taking a forceful tactic on every problem, there should be more progress to be made.

Hey Michael, be warned! Politics can is not as nice as it seems!

Everyone is greedy and do things for themselves, China and Taiwan is no different. I think the reason China invited Soong and Lien to China is to alienate Taiwan President Chen Sui-Bien. Chen has been on a indepedence platform for a few years now, and reiterated his stance on Taiwan independence in last year's election.

Soong and Lien, who both lost to Chen in the presidental elections one time or another, of course, dislike Chen. They are probably bitter too since the last elections was kinda shady.

By having Lien and Soon visit under the "open relations" slogan, both China and the two Taiwan leaders are making Chen look like the bad guy who is a stiffly opposed to such visits.

HOWEVER, I do agree that overall, this is good for China-Taiwan relations. But we just have to realize that there are ulterior motives too.

It's disheartening though how Taiwan doesn't seem to be very recognized at all. I recently read an article where they didn't allow Taiwanese reporters into the United Nations meeting because Taiwan isn't recognized as an official member of the UN. Anywho, I do believe that relations are improving between China, Taiwan, and the US. At least from the economic standpoint.

On a random non-related tangent, I recently remembered that whole election that went on between Lien chan and Chen shui bien. My friend Amy told me that Annette Lu would be a good person to write about for my paper since I'm concentrating on Taiwan, so I looked up an article about her. So I just remembered that whole conspiracy about whether the shooting was staged or not, and how they both got hurt. It's almost somewhat funny, the whole situation.
