If you are anything like me, you don't know much about China and the idea of travelling there, not knowing the lay of the land, and not speaking Chinese is daunting if not terrifying!

To prepare myself I am playing Chinese geography games and trying to aquire basic Chinese words and phrases, and I've found the following websites helpful:

These are great resources. I always think it is important to have an understanding of where you are going. I think that any attempt to learn a few key phrases can really go a long way as a foreigner. I'll be making some notecards on cardstock with the basic Chinese words and phrases from your websites here (I'll make a few extras if others are interested), considering GoogleTranslate may not be available. I know the app does have an offline feature--but not sure what exactly that would entail.

The piece I really liked from this is: "Keep in mind that it’s appropriate to haggle for souvenirs, clothing, shoes, and accessories in markets, but food is typically a fixed price." which makes a lot of sense if you think about it.

Hi Stephanie, I'd love to have a copy of your notecards if it is an easy thing for you to prepare. Having them to review and consult will make my lack of Chinese language expertise less worrisome.

I've been using Duo Lingo, but it's not the easiest language to grasp there. Still, it makes practicing a few key phrases fun and easy. Let me know if anyone has any other suggestions.
