My name is Susan Shi. I joined USC China institute by attending a book fair back in 2013 and made up my mind that I would pursue my teaching credential . Now I work as a Mandarin and Social Studies teacher in Pacific Beach Middle School in San Diego. Hi everyone,
My name is Zoey Smith and I teach 4th grade at Warner Avenue Elementary in Westwood through LAUSD. This will be my third year teaching. I attended USC for my B.A. in History and Psychology, and I'm excited to be back! I am half Chinese, half white, and I have spent a lot of time learning and thinking about mixed-race ("hapa" for those that are part Asian) identity. I would love to help my students develop their identities in the classroom as well, and to generally work on providing them with a culturally responsive education. Looking forward to meeting you all next week!
Hello everyone,
I am currently a Mandarin teacher in San Diego Unified School District, and this is my 4th year teaching in this district. Our school hosts Mandarin immersion program 6th through 8th grade.
Before my family moved to the west coast about 4 years ago, I taught Mandarin at college level for 6 years along the east coast. Besides teaching, I am also very interested in the research on language education and bilingualism, and I have been doing research on heritage Mandarin speakers for several years.
Originally I am from China, and I’ve been working and studying in the U.S. for more than 12 years. If you are interested in Chinese language, culture, or Asian cuisine, feel free to let me know and I will be more than happy to chat with you. Looking foward to meeting and ineracting with you soon.

Hello All,
I teach 5th grade in a Waldorf Charter School in Ukiah, Ca. I have been with my students since 1st grade, though I am new to teaching and just finished clearing my credential in January. Every year is a new curriculum for me, and next year, in 6th, I will teach about Ancient China and Japan. I am excited to be heading out of the fires of Northern California to USC to spend time collaborating, learning and finding new teaching ideas and inspiration.
Hello all,
I’m in my 8th year teaching Visual Arts and currently gearing up for my 6th year at an inclusive charter school here in Los Angeles. I love to travel and immerse myself as much as I can in other countries. I believe that is important for my students to be aware of cultures beyond their own so have developed a curriculum each year that involves artist and techniques from a variety of cultural backgrounds. I look forward to learning new ways of bringing the Chinese culture into my classroom.
