    EAST ASIA FROM ORIGINS TO 1800
    A SUMMER RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM AT USC
    August 1 to 5 and August 8 to 11, 2011
    APPLICATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, JULY 8, 2011, or until seminar is full


    TO BE ELIGIBLE, YOU MUST TEACH AT A SCHOOL LOCATED OUTSIDE LOS ANGELES COUNTY, MORE THAN 30 MILES FROM USC

    The USC U.S. – China Institute is offering a nine-day residential summer seminar for educators employed outside of the greater Los Angeles area. The seminar will be held at USC and participants housed at the USC Radisson Hotel. Enrollment is limited to 24 participants and priority will be given to high school world history and language arts teachers, though all K-12 educators are invited to apply.
    Focusing on helping teachers address the California history, social studies, and language arts standards, we will offer presentations on the history and culture of the region, as well as discuss how East Asian case studies can be used to explore a variety of issues. Sessions include discussions of revealing primary source materials as well as literature and film recommendations.
    Individuals who successfully complete the seminar and its follow-up requirements receive:
    · $200 in East Asian reference and teaching materials
    · $200 in East Asia-focused resource materials for use in the classroom
    · $500 stipend
    · Six (6) USC Rossier School of Education Continuing Education Units (CEUs), fee applicable
    Among the topics covered in the seminar:
    · Geography / Premodern China, Japan, and Korea (philosophy, social structure, key institutions)
    · 19th Century Domestic and External Challenges
    · War, Revolution, and Nation-Making
    · Economic Development and Social / Cultural Change
    · Relations with the United States
    · 21st Century Challenges and Opportunities
    · Web Research / Web Collaboration

    HOW TO APPLY

    Download the USCI/NCTA 2011 "East Asia from Origins to 1800" Summer Residential Seminar application from the attachment, or the “K-12 Curriculum” section of our website at http://china.usc.edu. In addition to the completed application form, you will need to submit:
    · A short 1-2 page resume (curriculum vita) listing your educational and work experience
    · A letter from your school principal confirming your teaching assignment
    · A refundable deposit check for $100, made payable to "University of Southern California," to hold your registration; the check will be returned to you at the conclusion of the seminar

    *APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, 7/8/2011, but we will begin admitting participants in early June*
