Many years ago I came upon a jewel of a movie. It was subtitled and amazingly interesting and funny. The movie is set in Shanghai, China in the 1940’s. It centers around a young man who is lost in life. He tries to fit in and desperately wants to be a kung Fu master. He even buys a pamphlet when he is little to become a master of the palm. He tries to join the local gang called the Axe gang. They didn’t want him and only used him for meaningless errands. He becomes very mean and loses what little he had. When he began to do what was right he began to see the good in him and that he was actually the greatest of the kung Fu masters.
The movie shows the belief in Buddhism and the importance of religion in the Chinese society. Every character in the movie had a strong belief in the the powers that Buddha would bestow on his people. The greater the character and heart the greater power bestowed.
This movie is very funny. There are many moments that you literally laugh out loud. When I was watching it for the fifth time, I still laughed and found it as funny as before. I highly recommend this movie.
