When I was an elementary school art teacher, I did a printmaking/bookmaking unit based on the book Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin, a beloved upper-grade fantasy novel set in ancient China (with 2 other books in the series!). One third grade class had read this book in class, and they each chose a scene or a set of visual images that represented the story for them and created block prints. They printed multiple copies and then we bound them into a book. I wish I had pictures to share! They were amazing.

The students were very excited because they were very connected to the book and the story. I would recommend this for a class readaloud for the upper grades, and there are infinite extension projects you could do to complement the reading experience!

Li Ji  Slays the Serpen is another chinese tale that is part of our 4th grade literacy program.  Kids love this tale of the little chinese girl that outsmarts the serpent that has been draining a village annually.
