Although this is a film told from the perspective of a British boy, I thought that there were some scenes of this boy interacting with Chinese and Japanese characters that would be interesting for my third grade students. It can provide some very good jumping off points for writing and discussion. It is precisely because it is a film about a young boy that I think my students will be able to relate to his actions, and internalize and come to some good conclusions and speculations. The themes of separation and hunger and unlikely friendships.
