Ancient History Encyclopedia (https://www.ancient.eu )is an award winning website recommended by School Library Journal for grades 7 and up. The site is easy to navigate. Students may use the search box at the top of the page for keyword and subject searching. There is a dropdown menu of the Encyclopedia for students to explore various sections: Index, Timeline, Explore, Videos, Images, and Audio Articles. The Audio Article are uploaded on SoundCloud and contains only 37 tracks. Here’s an audio article on hanji: https://soundcloud.com/ancientdoteu/hanji.
Students may use the Explore section to explore a region on the map. The East Asia section at https://www.ancient.eu/explore/15/ contains 23 pages of East Asian history: Ancient China, Ancient Korea, and Ancient Japan. The articles are accessible for students to read and understand. Every article contains images related to the content and keeps the information fresh and approachable. Some articles will contain a video embedded in the article that will further intrigue a student’s interest and enhance understanding. It’s a great site that addresses different learning styles.
I’m very impressed with Ancient History Encyclopedia. The site is very accessible for students to use for research. It’s colorful, clean, and very organized. There is a biography of the author for every article, with a list of bibliography and useful external links. If you have not explored this site, it’s well worth your time.
