Hello Everyone,
We look forward to seeing everyone this weekend. You will need to read this email carefully as it will provide you with directions, parking information, and schedule for this weekend. It will also list the things you must bring with you Saturday morning.
Directions to UCLA
UCLA is accessed from the Wilshire Blvd East exit on the 405 heading from either direction. After exiting Wilshire Blvd East, turn left on Westwood Blvd and you’ll be driving into the campus and towards the parking kiosk.
Parking
To obtain a parking permit for the day, please visit the parking information booth on Westwood Blvd. It will be in the center island on Westwood Blvd (see directions from the Wilshire exit above). Give the attendant the password: Study Tour. He/she will print you out a pass and direct you to parking Lot # 3.
Schedule and Where to Go:
We will meet in Bunche Hall, Room 10383. Visit http://www.ucla.edu/map/map_north.html to see a map of the northeast end of campus where both Lot # 3 and Bunche Hall are located. We’ll put up directional signs as well to help guide you.
Saturday
We will begin promptly at 9am – give yourself extra time to visit the parking booth, park, and walk to Bunche Hall ( I suggest getting to UCLA by 8:15)
We’ll provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Sunday
We will begin at 9am
We’ll provide breakfast and lunch
We’ll wrap at approximately 2pm (may go as late as 3pm)
Hotel Accommodations
You will all be staying at the Hilgard House (927 Hilgard Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90024 Tel: 310-208-3945, http://hilgardhouse.com)
Check-in isn’t until 3pm, so you’ll want to go directly to UCLA on Saturday morning and check-in Saturday night. You will be staying in double rooms (2 to a room) and roommates have already been assigned. You’ll check out Sunday morning before returning to campus for day two’s activities.
Please bring with you:
Your passport – we’ll need to keep these to turn in to the consulate in order to obtain your visas – we’ll do this for you
Passports must have 6 months of valid time left
One completed Chinese visa application form (you can download this form via the discussion forum: http://www.asia.ucla.edu/forum)
One passport photo for the Chinese visa
$50 cash for the visa
$250 cash – balance of deposit
Emergency contact information if you haven’t already provided this
That should just about cover all the basics. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Take care,
Linda

Hi Folks,
Just a couple quick notes on the roommate assignments. Whereever possible I tried to adhere to your preferences. This was not always possible, but I hope that everyone will work hard at being a cooperative roommate and tour member.
Why mix things up? One of our aims is for everyone to get to know everyone else during the course of the journey. Rather than just sitting beside your pal on the bus, at meals, and then going off to your room together, please make an effort to talk with others. Find out what they hope to do with this remarkable opportunity. Learn about their teaching style and discover what they think about what we're seeing and doing. One of the trip's most important purposes is to forge bonds that will last beyond the immediate experience, so that we can continue to come up with ways to better teach about Asia.
I've attached the curriculum assignment guidelines. Please remember to post your pre-trip plans here in the forum asap.
I am still in a state of flux over the particular lesson plan I will be doing. I have three ideas, which I already posted, but do not have one of the htree in concrete yet.
Hi, everyone,
SORRY that I've been largely absent from the forum. My life has turned chaotic in the last month. Our district just finished school on Friday, and the last few weeks were hectic, as I'm sure you can all identify. On top of that, my husband just accepted a job in another town, so we'll be moving this summer. This means I am now going to leave my beloved job, and am currently searching for a new job...and trying to pack and clean our house and my classroom, and trying to prepare for our trip!
But, I wanted to send you all a link to an article that was in the San Francisco Chronicle a few months back. The article speaks of the innovation and risk-taking measures taken by Toyota, which does quite a bit to dispel one of Sam's Seven Myths About Japan -- namely, the myth that Japan is a country of borrowers. Certainly not in this case!
Hope you enjoy,
Marisa
Now that I'm finally getting around to the things I've been thinking about doing...
A couple of months back I read an interesting article on China's economy and wanted to share it with you all, especially in light of the fact that all we hear these days is how China's economy is growing like Jack's beanstalk, and showing no sign of letting up. Let me know what you think of the article!
Marisa
Hi Folks,
Most of the information on the attached sheet is solid, the only question marks are on our hotels in Japan. Please print this out and share it with your friends and family. In an emergency, the most effective thing for them is to
a) figure out the time and date in China or Japan
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/
(Beijing is 15 hours ahead, Tokyo is 16 hours ahead of California.)
b) if it's daytime, call the tour guide on her cell phone; if it's nightime, call the hotel or send a fax
To just stay in touch with relatives, please call them (using phone cards) or use email. They can also call you via the hotel switchboard.
Clay:
Are we still leaving Monday morning, June 26? What time?
Courtey Lockwood
Hi Folks,
We're still fine tuning the itinerary to seize opportunities and work around closed museums and dark theaters. We've reduced the number of Japanese cities we'll stay in so as to spend a bit more time in each and to afford you some time to explore on your own. That said, you'll find this a very full schedule requiring a lot of walking and flexibility. We'll need everyone to cooperate and to pull together, making sure that we stay on schedule.
