A Battle of Wits () is 2006 Chinese film based on a Japanese historical novel titled Bokko (literally means “Mohist Attack”). It was also adapted into a manga series. The film is set in the Warring States Period of China. It is a story about a Mohist coming to help defend a city of a small kingdom from invaders. It is one of a few films about Mohism, which is not as well known as the big three of Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. The film has some great battle scenes that illustrate well the siege weapons used at the time as well as Mohist expertise in defense tactics and contributions in military technology. The first ten minutes of the film could be used to introduce Mohism in the unit on the Hundred Schools of Thought during the Classical Chinese Period. It will pique student interest in the philosophy as well as give them a sense of the turmoil of the time. You can find the clip here on youtube:
