Many resources I find are way too advanced for my students and I find my self selecting bits and pieces from them, but I would like to share them as they might be used in their entirely by others.

I believe the following would be appropriate for Social Studies teachers in high School:

Lessons to teach about names and identities, the Chinese immigration experiences and their struggle to live "Between Two Worlds"

    http://www.facinghistory.org/resources/units/becoming-american-a-series-three-l

    Quoted from the source:

    Overview:

    Who may live among us?
    Who may become an American?
What does it mean to be an American?

    Learning Outcomes: Students will:

    * Explore the links between one's name and his or her identity
    * Create a class identity chart
    * Explore both the unique and common challenges immigrants faced in the United States
    * Consider the power of language to exclude and include
    * Examine how individuals adjust to life in the United States
    * Examine the image of the Chinese in films during the 1920s and 1930s to develop an understanding of the challenges and opportunities Chinese Americans faced
    * Explore the struggle of the Chinese and other immigrant groups to secure a place for themselves in American society as Americans

Pretty soon Facing History and Ourselves are hosting an Open House for Educators.

I believe attending would help us on the lending of materials and although the topic of the day is not specifically about East Asia, we could get answers and ideas about the materials they have for free to help us with lessons related to East Asia

Free Event Date: 11/18/2009 from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

At Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Building, 350 South Bixel Street, Los Angeles 90017

They are offering snacks, drinks, free books & DVDs as well.

I already RSVP and hope to see you there

Thanks for this post. This event sounds interesting. Does this apply specifically for people within the LAUSD or can other educators -- i.e. independent schools -- attend as well?
