It looks like Bobby is coming home. I sometimes wonder what type of government we live under. Here is an international chess champion, who does not want to be here. Yet the United States government says we want you. Don't we have enough chess champions in the United States? Why do we want Bobby Fisher? Could it be because he defied the government went he went to play chess in Yugoslavia and had the gaul to publicly criticize this country for not allowing him to go. Could it be because he won three million dollars in that tournament and the government did not get one cent. Could it be his anti-semetic views or his praise for the attack on the United States on 911. I guess it is the same reason that Chief Joseph was not allowed to escape into Canada. Pride! We will teach you a lesson Mr. Fisher! Yet Osama is still runnig aroud. We did get his chauffeur and we will get you too Mr. Fisher.

Brandon's referring to the former chess champion's detention in Japan. His request for asylum has been rejected and he has been ordered deported. While only tangentially an Asia-subject (US-Japan relations), you may be interested in the latest on this:

Currently, Bobby Fisher a.k.a. Public Enemy Number One is still in Japan. He "faces" deportation, his passport was rebuked (he doesn't want it anyway), and he's now trying to become a German Citizen. He's upset with both the U.S. and Japan.

Why didn't he hire his attorney prior to the "'gross abuse' of government power?"
Maybe because he's rich.

But Bobby Fisher, genuis at chess, had no clue that when 911 happened that getting in and out of the country was going to be a bit more difficult not only for the Arabs, but for anyone who had an unresolved issue with the U.S. Government.

He's rich enough to buy himself out of this one and he'll be German soon enough.
It looks like he's made a poor move and is now caught in Check, not Checkmate.

This event happened not too long ago; seems like yesterday. When Bobby left the US, I thought he was really in for a new challenge that US didn't have. I don't think it was anything political nor was it anything about his poor decision making. A chess champion's dream is to find a great duel regardless of the polictical issues surrounding his championship. Although he did it in such a hurry that he didn't realize the importance and the affects his decision.

If the US values freedom, why were their sanctions against a chess match? Why can't we travel to Cuba without special government permission? If we could go to Nazi Germany for the Olympics, it would seem reasonable that Bobby Fischer could play a chess tournament. Everyday, the US government tells its own people and other people of other countries what is right and what can or cannot be done. If Fischer wants to move to another country, let him go. Doesn't the government have better things about which to worry?

I'm a little late on this one, but WHO CARES? Don't we have enough spoiled, rich, self-important people in the US already. Our gain is Iceland's loss!
