I just posted on the marraige thread, and it got me thinking about careers. I thought it'd be interesting to get to know each other a little bit. What are your guys' future career aspirations? Where do you get your inspiration from? I know some of us have not declared a major or our career path yet....so a different question can be what would your dream job be and why? Does fmaily influence have anything to do with your career choice?

Ok...so I'm a Bio major....throw me in the big pile with the other Asian Pre-meds. Yeah i sound typical...yes my parents are the type to love me to become a doctor. Their faces beam when i tell relatives I'm studying to me a doctor in the future. But in the long run, I've found that biology is really my forte. I love the subject material (except evolution and ecology...LS1) and i just enjoy absorbing information. I love working with people and I think this future career path gears well with my personality. I do agree that my family has always had high hopes for me to take this path. I think their focused support for a medical career has helped to solidify this path for me.

My absolute dream job would be to be an interior designer and to be a head chef at my own restuarant. My restuarant would be like Cheesecake Factory with all the different styles and regions of cooking jam-packed into a 2000 sq foot eatery in New York. Ok....now I realized I'm dreaming really big. But I am not super talented in either of those fields. And if for some reason i fail to become a doctor...I'll just be a food critic.

Very interesting post and topic! Well as for me, I guess my family situation is a little different because my mom actually doesn't want me to go to medical school. Despite her urging however, I feel that I would love to study and practice medicine.

Currently, my mom is a professor of neuroscience at UCLA and she also has an MD. My early exposure to her field of neuroscience was partly the reason why I chose psychobiology as my major. However, she tells me that medical school is too taxing and stressful, and that she doesn't want me to be so stressed out for at least 4 more years of my life. Ideally, she wants me to be a lawyer. However, my nonconfrontational, nonstubborn personality would make me a horrible lawyer. My situation is similar to Anna's in that I also love biology and have found that science comes more naturally to me than most humanities classes.

Over this past year at UCLA, I've actually been pretty stressed out about my future career. All of the adults around me say that I've got time to decide, but I feel like I should know by now. I've considered being an optometrist, a psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist, and even a news anchorwoman. I'm still not 100% sure about being a physician, but for now, that's the most realistic path for me. My dream job would be serving as an anchorwoman on the nightly news, but I just can't see myself realistically leaving the field of science for journalism. Wow, my future dream career is also having my own restaurant. I am such a big fan of good food that this would be my dream career. I would probably choose an Italian or French cuisine as the type of food to serve at my restaurant. I would probably also like owning my coffee shop and just sit around my coffee shop and enjoy my days.

Right now, I am a pre business econ major and I wouldn't mind working for corporate America either. haha. Personally, I am into electronics so I would prefer working at a company such as Sony, Panasonic, and do marketing or design for them.

I think it is really hard to say what I am going to do in 5 years. My dad was a plant biology major and when he left school, he started his own manufacturing business. So, I don't think anything is set in stones and I believe I have many different options.

What an interesting topic. I'm sure that everyone here has thought about and already know what kind of careers they are or will be interested in. As for, I hope to graduate next year, study abroad for the summer, and continue on in law school. Many ask me why I am in such a rush, maybe because i have planned this route eversince i started college a couple years back. I have experienced many things in my life, and i've never been more inspired to push forward in my academic career and fowarding into my dream career as a corporate lawyer. I know it is going to tough, and the competition will be fierce, but i am ready to TAKE THAT ON! haha. I hope that everyone here will achieve their dreams and aspirations as well.

I grew up in a business environment. Both my parents started their own business & I have been helping out ever since I can talk. Nearly all my relatives on my father's side are in business, and the same goes for my mother's side.
Everytime I go back to Taipei, Taiwan.... I'm inspired to excel in the business field & have focused on my career since high school.
I'm very persistant about leadership development, public speaking, writing & communication skills, as well as analytical thinking. Throw in some creativity & competiveness...... I'm there.

I hope to go to a competitive graduate school for my MBA and work with McKinsey Consulting post-undergrad & post-grad. At the same time, I want to start my own family and set aside money for a house and for investment purposes.

At UCLA, I plan on majoring in Business Economics & double-minoring in English and Accounting in addition to interning and gaining work experience.

Yay for pre-med's and business majors! I think our culture tends to favor these 2 careers. When I did art in high school and wrote frequently, my mother discouraged me from pursuing the arts as a career........ she said I would be a starving artist & that I will have nothing to fall back on.

........ but she didn't say I can pursue art on my free time!

What an interesting topic. I've recently read an article on how Asian parents prefer their children to pursue careers in the math and science field. I believe the title is "Parental Sacrifices and Children Obligation." Most parents want their children to major in math or science, or even business, to secure a job later on in life. They tend to think that arts and the humanities majors are less secure. My parents are quite understanding, and never really forced my siblings and me. We are free to choose our own careers; after all, we're the ones working toward it. As of right now, I'm still undeclared, but i'm taking the prerequisites for life science majors, since like some of you guys, I find that I'm better at biology than other subjects. In particular, I'm really interested in molecular/genetics biology. I'm leaning towards majoring in MIMG (Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics), and minoring in education at UCLA. I've always wanted to teach, so I think eventually, I might pursue a teaching career. A lot of us might feel that we should take our parents' advice with regards to choosing a stable career, but I think following one's passion is the key factor to finding the best career for oneself.

It looks like I'm in the same boat as many of you guys - on the track for a life science/bio major not just because my parents would be happy with that, but because it's what I actually enjoy and excel at. I'm aiming to be a premed, but then again so is half of the campus 😀 I'm going into this field because I think it's something that I actually will enjoy, and I must say I'm also one who needs a bit of financial security with my future. I was raised to be an independent person and I feel like I need to be making my own money when I grow up.

I initially wanted to be here for 3 years, but now I'm considering four years and studying abroad =P which would be so cool. I think my dream dream job would be an editor/writer of a fashion magazine like Vogue or Harper's Bazaar... but I don't think I'd make that good of a journalist/writer (lol as evidenced in my paper i'm sure )

My dream career is to become a pharmacist. I've always wanted to become a pharmacist since I was like in the tenth grade. I know it's not the most interesting profession in the world, but it's something I can see myself doing for the rest of my life. Seeing as how there are so many pharmacists or people going into this profession at the moment, the competition is making me a bit "antsy" and it is discouraging at times. However, getting into pharm school is my dream, my goal, so i'll just try my best and see where life takes me...
