Many of us are very familiar with the dropping of the two atomic bombs in 1945, but (at least among Americans, I believe) few are aware of the damage that firebombs did to the city of Tokyo--specifically the attack on March 10th, 1945. Thanks to the tireless efforts of a small few, and thanks to over 4000 private donors, the Center of the Tokyo Raids and War Damage was established.
I cannot recall how this small Tokyo museum came to my attention, but I had the good fortune to visit and even take a small group of students to. The small staff (mostly volunteers) was so kind, accomodating and appreciative of our visit. My students' levels of Japanese were quite low and the small center is not used to welcoming non-Japanese visitors, but they did everything in their power to help us understand and digest the information presented.
The English website is rather thin, but it could be a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about this tragic event in America and Japan's shared past.
