Local and state government officials sought to reduce the number of excess with regard to local staff, instituting fair punishment, and controlling the population to avoid or quench revolts.
These readings are a good introduction to the civic life during the Early Ming and Qing dynasties.
Students may be surprised about the concept of "chattel" - or a "dowry" that is paid to the grooms/bride's family.

The Tang legal code sought to apply appropriate judgements and punishments apropos to the crime. Both civil and criminal punishments for each crime were included in the law automatically. Restitution was paid equal to the loss. It is an interesting legal document which forms the codification for present day civil and criminal matters.
