I would be interested in attending a Chinese Opera. I know Opera isn't for everyone but the limited exposure that I've had is only positive. I am a musician and am emotionally moved by music and song telling a story. The emotion that is evoked from the Operatic performers amazes me because of what they are able to convey using their voices. I am curious what the Chinese Opera is like because last year I attended Shen Yun and they featured one of their premier Divas. For me, the performance was not pleasing to my ears and I was not able to fully benefit from the message. Is this what all Chinese Opera is like? Is it in a different style than I am accustomed? I will keep my eyes open for more opportunities and give it another try.

The Huntington Library is hosting: An Evening with Huang Ruo on Tuesday January 31 at 7:30 pm. Composer Huang Ruo, the 2017 Cheng Family Visiting Artist at The Huntington, discusses Chinese opera and how his work reinterprets this traditional genre in a contemporary context. This is the first of a series of three presentations. It is free, no reservations required. The conference will be in the Rothenberberg Hall.
