Covering China (4/21/2012) Half Day Seminar at USC

Dear Colleagues,

Per our seminar schedule for this spring, we will be having a weekend half-day workshop at USC on Saturday, April 21. This will be Session #3/4 of our East Asia seminar. For this workshop entitled "Covering China," we will be presenting award-winning and print and broadcast journalists, Rob Schmitz fromMarketplace; Mei Fong from the Wall Street Journal, and Ching-ching Ni from the Los Angeles Times to speak on their experiences on reporting on China.

We will waive the registration fees ($25) for our teachers on that day. The information for this half-day workshop is as follows:

China’s rise is one of the most dramatic and complex stories of our time. The country is enormous, diverse, and the issues are many. It’s a challenge to convey how China is changing to audiences an ocean away. Join us for a half-day workshop and then enjoy the Los Angeles Times Book Festival at USC. Presenters are award-winning print and broadcast journalists. You’ve no doubt read or heard their work. Come learn about how events and trends become the stories you consume and sometimes share with students. Since news reports do much to shape our attitudes about China and other places, it’s vital that we consider how news is produced and how such discussions can help students become stronger news consumers as well as writers and presenters. Rob Schmitz, Shanghai-based reporter for public radio’s Marketplace
Mei Fong, former Hong Kong and Beijing-based Wall Street Journal reporter
Ching-ching Ni, former Beijing-based for the Los Angeles Times

Moderator:
Clayton Dube, USC US-China Institute

Schmitz’s work on dishonest reporting on FoxConn has attracted considerable attention in recent days. Fong was part of a team that received a Pulitzer Prize for reports on “China’s Naked Capitalism.” Ni’s honors include a prestigious Nieman Foundation Fellowship at Harvard University. In addition to extensive experience in China, each of these reporters worked in the United States covering a wide range of stories.
