Wow! Thanks for sharing the site, Robin. It is truly One stop site for "Understanding China's 5000-year Culture", I book marked the site and I will share it to my network in the future.
Robin, I too found this web site very beneficial. The section on "The Chinese Character, an Interpretable Chinese Culture" was especially helpful to me. This section actually draws the character showing how each stroke is formed and has audio to allows you to practice the Chinese sound. It also gives you a detailed history of each character.
Robin, this is definitely a great website for exploring Chinese tradition and culture. It will save me a lot of time for my prep. Thank you very much for sharing!
Robin thank your for sharing this website - it's invaluable! I've been exploring this for my lesson and have found a lot of valuable information for future use. Many thanks!
Thanks, Robin. This website is a gold mine of information. We have an annual Historical Figure Day at our school where students choose a figure from a time period studied in the grade level they are in, research, complete a project, and come to school dressed up as that figure on a specified day. I found some information about Zheng He who sailed the seas during the Ming dynasty that would be helpful for a 7th grader. Another link on there that I found interesting was "Short Stories - Great Wisdom". The one story titled "Two Widows and a Lover" is familiar to other cultures. Two women deny wrongdoing, one is honest, and the other is not. So the magistrate has each one inflict punishment on the third party. The one who is lying ends up being discovered. Thank you again.
This is indeed a very resourceful website (http://www.cultural-china.com/) about Chinese culture. Besides introducing calligraphy, painting, opera, music and dance, it also includes alcohol and tea culture, plus traditional Chinese games and sports. On the home page, there is a section called “Chengyu of the day,” which introduces a four-character Chinese idiom and its origin. On the same page, there’s another section, “Find China Culture from movies”. You can find many good movies there.
This is the richest cultural website on China that I have seen and it gives so many interesting topics that are accessible to children as well as adults. Thank you, "jjong" for discovering it for us. I, too, teach middle school and this is a site that I can let them explore independently or which I can project onto the screen for all to view at once. Some of the topics are: Yin-Yang, Feng Shui, gestures, clothing, Chinese characters, Folk Art, Chinese Astrology and much more. While the articles may not go into great depth, they do satisfy basic curiosity and stimulate interest in Chinese culture. I am really glad to now have it as a resource.
Wow: what a nice source for all kinds of information! Thanks for mentioning it.
I found this website when I was working on our philosophical debate. It is http://cultural-china.com. This website is put out by the Shanghai News and Press Bureau, and it is pretty much one stop shopping for a middle school teacher such as myself. The site contains and/or links to information on Chinese traditions, art, history, culture, cultural news, health, literature, and food. It also has some cool tools and games; I immediately made a Chinese name for myself using one such tool (it suggested Feng Rui bin!) There is also a blog on Chinese culture. I really recommend this site highly!
I took a quick look at this site yesterday and loved it...thanks!
