This is a 5th grade unit that is designed to be instructed toward the end of the school year once students have already learned about early explorers and the founding of Jamestown.
Ideally it would take about a week but could be stretched. There is heavy technology usage to explore sources as well as partnered and group activities. The summative assessment will be an essay that is modeled after current district ELA assessments that focus heavily on open-ended questions and the reliance of sources to form opinions.
