As social science teachers, it is critical that we provide students with the opportunity to explore the world not just by looking at the past, but also by examining the present. One of the ways to deepen students’ understanding of East Asia is through checking the news from East Asian newspapers. Students are familiar with The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and BBC, but not many know about South China Morning Post or The China Post. These two web resources provide English language news stories about Greater China, specifically Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The South China Morning Post, now owned by Alibaba Founder Jack Ma, publishes two editions: Hong Kong and International. If you click the Hong Kong edition, you will find stories about life in Hong Kong. You can also access articles about China. This is a really good resource to learn more about Chinese politics from a Chinese-based news source. The coverage of topics is not often seen in other English language newspapers.

The China Post is a Taiwanese based English language newspaper. You can find news stories about Taiwan and mainland China. If you click on the Taiwan tab, you will find stories about Taiwan that you will not find elsewhere. For example, this news site also talks about cross-strait relations.
