Being that most of us are Asian, I think that this question will be quite interesting. When you go out to eat with your family, what type of food do you normally eat? Asian food? American food? Fast food? Sit down restaurants? Mexican food? Does the type of restaurant you go to change when you're eating with just your friends? I find that for me, I tend to eat more authentic Chinese food with my parents and a greater variety with friends. This is mostly because I don't feel capable of ordering by myself in Chinese at an authentic Chinese restaurant.
Also, what type of food do you normally eat at home? Do you guys have rice and soup at every meal?
And the last question I have pertaining to food is, what is your favorite Asian dish? I think mine is sushi and especially sashimi. I also love this type of Korean barbacue called "dduk bo sam" Excuse my bad pronunciation. It's sort of like korean barbacue where you wrap a piece of beef (or pork) with this thin layer or rice cake. MMMm. I had it at this restaurant in K-town called Manna. I highly recommend it.
When I usually go out with my family to eat and my parents choose the restaurant, they love to pick Vietnamese places. And i think this is more so because they like the convienence of not having to cook. Also, it's a meal the family can enjoy away from the family dining table while still keeping the traditional food on the table is symbolic of being in a familiar place and setting.
On the other hand, when my siblings or I choose the restaurant, we tend to choose non-Vietnamese places in order to spice up the variety. My parents do enjoy this change, but they typically are very content with good Vietnamese food.
At home, we usually eat rice with a meat and vege dish or noodle soup. The thing i love with home cooked meals is that my parents don't tend to just cook rice or soup; they themselves would get bored of eating the same thing, so our family cooks many differnt types of meals. Occasionally (maybe 1-2 times a week) my mom will make Italian, mexican, or another type of food other than Vietnamese.
Even though we eat a lot of Vietnamese food in my house, it's my first love. I could never live without Vietnamese food, and it's the one thing i miss most while living up here at LA and not being able to eat it at dinner. I seriously have these huge cravings, and when i go home..it's just so tasty to have Viet food.
When I go out with family, we usually just have Chinese food. Normally, we prefer to eat at a sit down restaurant, but once in a while we'll also have fast food. I think like most families we probably spend the most time together as a family when we are eating. Most of the times though, the family eats at home and my mom usually cooks. Yes, probably like most Asian families we have rice almost at every meal.
With friends, I think it is more likely that we go to a fast food restaurant. Being poor students, money becomes an issue when dining out and we normally don't want to spend too much money on food. I think when hanging out with friends, convenience and price of the food are the most important options that I would consider before choosing where to eat.
It's always a surprise what kind of food we have when I go out to eat with my family. Usually it's either a Chinese seafood restaurant, Italian, American stuff (like CPK), or Japanese.
Personally I love Korean food, but since Ktown is kind of far from where I live, I don't get to have it too often. I was actually there over the weekened and I got to have some Bulgogi and Kimchi fried rice. Galbi is also really good, but expensive. One thing about Korean food that's great is you get all of those little side dishes (that I dont' know the proper names for) that come along with whatever you order. Stuff like bean sprouts, spicy pickled daikon, or kimchi. In that way, Korean food beats Chinese food where all you get is what you ordered.
i usually eat in order; chinese , vietnamese, thai/korean. my parents dont like eating american food and thinks it is overpriced. if we do eath western food it is usually french and thats only on fancy occasions. i love gui cuon but its better when my mom makes it . i like cambodian noodle soup.. my father makes it best. and most places i like peking duck .. the chinese dish with the lettuce wrap and shredded beef i think i dont know. and i cant live without vietnamese food.. and yeah.. i love to eat.. its the best thing in the world..next to sleeping and shopping
i eat different types of food with different types of people. when i eat out with my family, it's ALWAYS either vietnamese food or chinese food in a viet restaurant. however, with friends, it's different because we eat whatever we crave at the moment. plus, we're willing to try new things. i used to eat a lot of authentic asian food back at home (with rice at every meal) but now that i'm living in the dorms, it's very hard to do so. come to think of it, i really miss the asian dishes like pho, sushi, korean bbq, etc. my most favorite asian dish would have to be roasted duck. yum! =)
When I go out to eat my parents, we typically go to vietnamese restaurants. I think my parents enjoy the food and the feeling of familiarity. I took them to Thai restaurants a few times; they like the food, but still prefer Vietnamese food. I, myself, also love Vietnamese food. However, I'm definitely more willing to try other types of food than my parents are. I love all kinds of Asian foods: Thai, Korean, Indian, Chinese, and definitely Vietnamese food. I have yet to try authentic Japanese food.
My family usually have rice, meat, fish, vegetables, and soup for our meals (not all at once, but they alternate...well sometimes all at once 😛 ). Like a lot of you, despite having these food frequently at home, I still love it and perhaps have withdrawal symptoms (a bit exaggerated) if I dont have them for a long time.
For the most part my family eats at home; my mom usually prepares the meals with minimal help from my dad. However, my dad makes a killer chicken curry dish! Yeah. . .I know what's up with the random Indian dish? Anyway, our meals are usually always a combination of Chinese and American. We ALWAYS have soup and rice. Which I MUST add has been a tragic loss for most Asians here in the UCLA dining halls. The so-called "rice" here is dry and undercooked. I long for sticky rice which I think Hedrick does the best. The soup here is also a major pet peeve. Everything's so thick and unsavory.
Anyway, usually once a week my dad will bring home take-out food from a Chinese restaurant in Oakland Chinatown. And the weekends are times during which my family "goes out" to eat. We usually do authentic Chinese food in Oakland Chinatown, Japanese, Italian, or Vietnamese. Strangely my parents have an affinity for Taco Bell and In & Out when it comes to fast food. I'm guilty of introducing my parents to In & Out, that was one of the few American pastimes I've introduced to my parents.
Quite frankly I don't really even know what "American" food is. Because America is one huge melting pot of people so America doesn't really have its own signature food. The closest thing that most people will pick out as American is all the "fast food" chains like McDonald's, Burger King, and even Wendy's or Denny's. But all that stuff is SO unhealthy. The fact that we have the opportunity to go to all these different kinds of restaurants serving foods from all cultures is what makes American food "American."
When I go out to eat with my family and my mom and grandma are present, we almost always go to eat at traditional Vietnamese places. This is mostly because they don't enjoy American, Italian, Japanese, and other types of food as much as Vietnamese food.. so there's really no point in going anywhere else if they're not gonna like it. When I go out with my sisters or friends, however, we usually don't go to these traditional Vietnamese places, partly because we wouldn't be able to order well and partly because we get a lot of Vietnamese food already.
At home we eat traditional Vietnamese meals with rice and soup and other meat and veggie dishes... typical Vietnamese style 😀
And I dont know if I could pinpoint a single favorite asian dish, because I know there are MANY just Vietnamese dishes that I love, not to mention all the different types of sushi and korean bbq and hot pot.. and oh how the list goes on...
mm.. i'm hungry 😛
Where I eat usually depends on who I eat with. If it's just me and my friends, we'd go anywhere from sit-down Italian to fast food. If it's with my parents, my dad would like to try different foods, but it'd usually end up being some Asian restaurant. If I also dine w/my cousins (we used to live very close before I moved), then it'll always be a Chinese restaurant because my uncle refuse to eat any other cuisine.
My family and I have this restaurant that we go to pretty much once every week. It's called Maxim Cafe, a Hong Kong Style restaurant in Rowland Heights. Most people don't really know what a "hong kong style cafe" is because when they think of chinese food, they think seafood: lobster, fish, crab, or DimSum, or worse: Panda Express. We like to go to Maxim because it pretty much has a little bit of everything.... there are Chinese dishes like Chow FUn and Chow Mien and all that good stuff, but because HOng Kong was under the influence of British for so many years, there are also more westernized dishes like different pastas and sandwiches and spaghetti. So there's a little bit of something for everybody, especially if we're going with some of my younger cousins who don't prefer Asian style food and my grandma and aunts and uncles who don't like westernized food.
My family personally likes home-cooked meals, but when we are too lazy to cook, we like to go out and eat. Usually, we would dine at local Vietnamese resturants since we are surrounded by so many. Rice plates, family dishes, and sometimes pho are among the things we usually order. Besides from Vietnamese food, my family also like to eat at Chinese resturants too, but usually they are all Chinese-Vietnamese. When its my birthday though, my parents like to take me out to American resturants, becuase i guess they think i prefer it. My favorite asian food has to be Wonton soup! I love it, i always order it whenever i have the chance. 😀
