The Economist's Asia section, at https://www.economist.com/asia/ is a great resource for contextualized articles about contemporary events in Asia. Though not exclusively about East Asia, it regularly features articles about Taiwan, China, and Japan, along with other East Asian countries. China actually has its own section on the website.
I appreciate that the Economist's articles are written in a straight-forward fashion and provide regional and historical context for most issues they cover. Additionally, counter to the name, the articles do not all focus on the economy. Most cover political and social issues. The articles (and even just the beginnings of many articles) are great resources to help students understand and unpack current events, if they want to learn about the issues beyond just the headlines.
