Attending "Rise of East Asia" seminars have truly been enlightening, I have never visited nor thought about visiting Asia; however, after taking this course I now have an interest in visiting China. I have gained a new perspective on the way I see Western culture, and how I listen to others from other cultures. I once thought American culture was supreme, just, and righteous, I'm now questioning my own values in relations to other cultural values. I have gained a new foundation on Asia history, its leaders, and social justice and injustices. I plan to bring what I have learned about Asia into my Kindergarten classroom though art, music, poetry, and the use of technology.
For the year 2018, my students will learn about the Chinese New Year, and create a lantern, and Art work using Chinese numbers. For the following year, since it is too late to request a field trip for this school term I hope to take my students to China town to experience the food, language, cultural, and the Chinese/Asian Americans history. Once back in the classroom we will write poetry (haiku, sijo), and read haibun literature; create Chinese rice, view maps, and review Information from web sites on American treatment of Asian Americans.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to attend this class; because of this class I now have a wealth of resources, sites I can visit for my own studies, and sites to help my students gain a clear perspective of East Asia history.
