Aileen's recommendation is a great one. I hope she doesn't mind if I mention that Saltzman also plays himself in a movie based on his memoir. Saltzman's an insightful writer. Several passages in the book stand out, including when he discussed the end of WWIIwith his students. You may be interested in other books he's written, including a memoir of how he became interested in martial arts. He's a local guy. Perhaps he could be persuaded to speak at a PV event at some time. He's married to filmmaker / tv director Jessica Yu.

Thanks, Clay. I had no idea that Mark Salzman lived in Southern California. That is defnitely a plus in encouraging our teachers to consider this book as a core novel or summer reading requirement (for Honors/AP). I will include that information in my Summer Reading List for our teachers. And there was a movie made about this? I just checked on Amazon.com, and it has a very good rating. Amazon also lists some of the other books that he has written. I had no idea he had written that much. The movie that goes with the movie is another plus. I think another program at our school that might be interested in this book is our AVID program. One teacher in particular (Jim Whalen) and I often collaborate in coming up with good titles that will engage his students. He's especially interested in Asian culture (he should take the class), so this might interest him.

I've read Salzman's other book called True Notebooks about his experiences teaching writing in a high security juvenile facility. Excellent. I will explore his other books.[Edit by="willoughbyak on May 31, 12:49:29 PM"][/Edit]
