I reviewed the site "History Extra" specifically on Samurai since I plan on having my students complete a project researching different warriors from around the world and throughout history. I will be teaching accelerated and general education English this upcoming year. After my experience working with my students last year that were ELL or had a processing issue, having access to "history extra" is great because it is more concise, has great visuals of things like the armor, and emphasizes who wrote the article and their credibility. It also helps debunk some of the myths or hollywoodization of samurai that helps you understand the ideals in Japan. I attached History.com as a comparison for you to see how much more in depth and lengthy it goes into the samurai; for some of my students and based on the time allotted for the assignment that may or may not work.
Here are the instructions for what I plan to have them do as a webquest and as a summative assignment for our unit on Survival:
-
Time period and famous locations (specific)
-
Key features (What do they look like or wear?)
-
What weapons or style of fighting is used?
-
Traveling or established location? (If traveling, why did they travel?
-
Training/Expectations (Teacher? Age? Rules?)
-
How are they portrayed in the present? (Hollywood, TV, dramas, cartoons, comics) Find a picture or still to insert and explain where you saw them and what your perception of them is. (Be respectful.)
Project: Create a manga page, poster, job advertisement, research one famous example (male or female) for your warrior, find an example of a warrior/hero of your choice and compare and contrast to the one you researched.
*Ms. Sanchez must approve your warrior if it is not on this list!
