As a Japanese teacher, I am looking for copyright free images to use to teach culture aspects of Japan. For the past several years I have used a site called Irasutoya. https://www.irasutoya.com/

This site is created by a Japanese artist who allows others to use the images copyright free for educators. I have even seen some of the illistrations be used by Japanese companies and on Japanese news show segments. I have used these images in my online classroom presentations, activities, and projects. I encourage students to use these images too for their own work as well.

The site is all in Japanese, so it is easier to use of you know a bit of Japanese (like typing Japanese words into the search bar since English words are not recognized. However, the site is very visual and anyone can click through to find wonderful clip art images for free use. There are catagories listed on the first page such as Events, Daily Life, Food, People, and Job-Related images. The images might feature adult actions such as drinking alcholol and smoking/vaping, but overall is student friendly.

I really like the visuals and many lend themselves perfectly to topics that I might have trouble finding images in English image searches, especially images featuring Japanese holidays or customs (like taking your shoes off at the entrance area of a home or school).

What do you think of this resource? Did you find any images that you might be able to use?
