    International Leadership -- the Pilot

    Seven students from the International Leadership class at Escondido Charter High School visited Shanghai, China in April on a ten-day trip that they planned and implemented themselves. Students participated in a variety of experiences designed to introduce them to life in China and gain an understanding of Chinese culture, government and business.
    The students met with Carina Klein, Cultural Affairs Officer at the American Consulate for a one hour diplomatic briefing. They learned about living in Shanghi as an American from a businessman and his family from Arkansas. They participated in a discussion of the American Judicial System at Film Night hosted by the American Consulate. They traveled on the Shanghai subway system and participated in the Chinese national holiday, Tomb Sweeping Day.

    Students also presented the Escondido Chamber of Commerce's banner to the American Chamber of Commerce of Shanghai.
    The International Leadership class at ECHS examines leadership as an inside-out, relational cultural phenomenon. Students explore their own leadership potential and learn how to work with people from diverse racial and ethical backgrounds

    Course Objectives This course is designed to look at leadership as an inside-out, relational cultural phenomenon – from individual development to group dynamics and eventually to complex multi-cultural organizations. A broad range of leadership topics including self-development and understanding group behavior, employ cultural sensitivity, diplomacy organizational design, ethics and teamwork is covered. Concepts of leadership are introduced and the potential of individual students to develop effective leadership skills is examined.
    Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

    • Explore their personal leadership characteristics and potentials, and be able to use this self -knowledge to enhance existing leadership strengths and to acquire new leadership skills.
    • Develop specific communication skills and be able to apply them to improve group effectiveness.
    • Study group dynamics and be able to apply specific principles and skills to improve group effectiveness.
    • Analyze the ethical dimensions of leadership and be able to recognize the moral dimensions of leadership issues and use basic ethical principles to make decisions.
    • Identify basic characteristics of complex organizations and be able to recommend an effective a change process and general organizational structure.
    • Be able to employ cultural sensitivity and diplomacy
    • Be able to solve cultural problems
    • Be able to negotiate across cultures
    • Motivate cross-cultural teams
    • To be able to work with people from diverse racial and ethical backgrounds
