Hey all, I'm Julia Gaytan D'Amico and I currently teach 6th and 7th grade social studies at Century Academy for Excellence in Inglewood. I look forward to collaborating with professors, experts and fellow k-12 educators in formulating a more holistic East Asian curriculum that analyzes the continual development of East Asian cultures as both independent entities as well central points within spheres of (trade) cultural diffusion that have come to influence the rest of the world. I hope to deepen my knowledge of the contextual framework where East Asian countries developed so I can offer a more critical perspective on how geography shaped the politics, religion and social structures in that region. I look forward to meeting and collaborating with you all!

Hi, my name is Donna and I teach 10th grade World History and AP World History at Huntington Park High School. I am most familiar with Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African history and have a huge gap when it comes to East Asian History. I teach Asian history as part of the AP curriculum and I look forward to learning East Asian History in more detail through this course.

Hello party people in the place to be,

My name is Oscar Moreno and I"m currently teaching Modern World History and AP European History. I'm really exited for the course as I feel my knowledge on Asia is very week. Given I teach about the World's history it would behoove me to know more than just European and American Imperialistic campaigns in Asia and what they left in their wake. Hopefully, this course will greatly change that.

Hello, my name is Caroline Rhude and I teach English at Hamilton High School. I had the good fortune to attend the US-China Session last fall where I found the readings surprisingly relevant to my existing curriculum. I'm excited to learn what other perspectives I can bring to my students.

Good morning! I'm Carly McCarty & I teach World Literature (ELA 10) in Riverside (amongst many other things I've taught). I am excited to be part of the US-China Institute. A former administrator encouraged the program many years ago; however it didn't fit into my schedule at the time. I remained on the mailing list and have eagerly been awaiting one that would work for me. I found myself continually "bumping into Asia." My ex-husband's former college roommate invited us to stay with his family in Japan after he stayed in Mexico with my ex-husband's family after his visa ran out. I initially had no interest in going to Japan until I got there and fell in love with the culture, food, and geography of Japan. Later as a teacher, I hosted several Korean teachers who had been sent their by their government to help their instruction in English. My father is married to a Chinese woman. Despite this, I realized I really knew very little about the history, economics, politics, and culture of East Asia. I didn't understand the dissimilarities between the countries. I had a vague understanding of the emergence of their economies, but not how it fit into the global economy. I would like to learn more about the key historical and cultural figures. Who are prominent people I need to be aware of & their role in their particular historical role. Who are contemporary political figures to be watching? I need to do a much better job of incorporating this important piece of culture into my World Literature class. Again, thank you for accepting me into the program & I look forward to meeting & working with the others.

Hello! I'm Jenny Tang and I teach in Alhambra. I teach art, particularly Ceramics and Drawing/Painting at an alternative high school. My students are juniors and seniors that have been placed at our school due to deficiency in credits towards graduation and/or behavioral or expulsion contracts that transferred them from their comprehensive high schools. Our student population is at least 80% Latinos which will make it more interesting for me to introduce this unfamiliar culture to them.

I'm American and my ethnicity is Chinese. I am looking forward to learning more about Asia and its cultures. For some unknown reason, I've never been interested to familiarize myself to Asia or my culture in the past. Fortunately I am very much eager and interested in learning more about Asia and its cultures, including my very own culture. I've traveled to different countries in Europe and South America yet have not traveled to Asia since I was eight.

It's time I gain some knowledge of such a beautiful culture and share it with my students. I plan to use the resources and material from this course to incorporate what I learn into my lesson planning and instruction for my students xo!

Hi I'm Linda Wirtzer. I did not get to introduce myself last night, so let me do it here.
I teach 6th grade English/Social Studies at Byrd Middle School in the San Fernando Valley. Ancient India and China are in my curriculum and I believe my weakest units. I have been to other countries that I teach and I feel my background knowledge makes those units come alive. That, with the fact that my son's fourth grade teacher had them study Japan for the entire year, including writing a "term paper" - he fell in love with Japan and Asia right then. After college, he spent a year traveling in SE Asia, 11 countries, including 3 months in Japan, taking pictures and seeing the world. So with his interest, my weak units - this class sounded perfect. And the thought that I could travel to China and take that back to my class - Wow!
    See you in 2 weeks.

    Hi All-
My name is Jill Tarango and I am currently teaching at Curtiss Middle School in Carson. I teach 7th grade Medieval World History. I am new to the teaching profession, this is only my second year in the classroom. I am excited to be a part of this seminar as many of the topics we will be covering are part of the 7th grade social studies standards. As a new teacher, I am always looking for opportunities to grow and bring new ideas into my classroom. I feel fortunate to be part of this seminar and surrounded by so many inspiring teachers.
