During one of the seminars we focused on the topic of Korean art. Throught that conversation the mentioning of Korean folkart, Minhwa was brought up. Minhwa refers to Korean folk art produced mostly by intinerant or unknown artists without formal training, emulating contemporary trends in fine art for the purpose of everyday use or decoration. The term "minhwa" was coined by Yangai Muneyoshi. Minhwa literally means "painting of the people" which I believe is such a wonderful phrase the artwork. Without my knowledge, I had already taken part in painting the Magpie and Tiger from the 19th century.
Intrested in finding out more about the Minhwa, I found "Notes from the Edge. On Art, Culture, Korea, etc." It is a wonderful site that details the background history of Minhwa. Further, the wesbite really explains the purpose and style of Minhwa art within the Korean Cultutre. Additionaly it provides examples of Minhwa and those that were turned into center folds for Western admirers. I think this would be a wonderful activity to introduce to students, it is simplistic yet interesting with bold lines and colors. The style of artwork is beautiful to look at and can be encouraging for those who feel they are not gifted in the field of arts.
