    3 Day Lesson Plan

    USC US-China Institute Summer Residential Institute 2018 Lesson Plans

    Content Standards: 7.5 5 Study the ninth and tenth centuries' golden age of literature, art, and drama and its lasting effects on culture today, including Murasaki Shikibu's Tale of Genji.

    Common Core Standards:

    Day 1:

    Lesson Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the Tale of Genji by completing a KWL chart.

    Warm up: Students will fill out the K section of the KWL chart, based on their knowledge gained from their reading homework assignment, History Alive! Ch 21 Pg. 236-37.

    Input: Students will read a visual summary of The Tale of Genji, in order to provide them with content for them to fill the rest of the KWL. The Tale of Genji, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlhMYYw6k0Y.  The video will need to be paused frequently, to allow the students to read the content and analyze the images.

    Guided Practice: Students will work in groups of 4, share ideas, and answers the WL sections of the KWL chart.

    Day 2:

    Lesson objective: Students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of the use of color in illustrations by analyzing different images.

    Warm-up: Think-Pair-Share-Students will discuss, “why do artists use different colors or no color at all?”

    -Students will have 3 minutes to discuss, then the teacher will call randomly on several students to share their ideas.

    Input: Students will be given 2 different images, “Tale of Genji: Wakamurasaki” album painting by Tosa Mitsuoki c. 1675 (color) and “Genji Yamato-e kagami” printed book by Hishikawa Moronobu , 1685. (black & white)

    Guided Practice: Students will analyze both images, then create at least 3 questions for the artist, and share them with other groups.

    -Students will add any new knowledge they gained from analyzing the 2 images in to the L section of their KWL chart.

    Day 3:

    Lesson Objective: Students will be able to create their own image based on their knowledge of The Tale of Genji.

    Warm-up: Students will do a Think-Pair-Share, to brainstorm ideas for their drawings.

    Input: Students will be given a variety on images from the Tale of Genji online. The images will be uploaded to an online learning system platform called Schoology. The images titles are, “Tale of Genji: Chapter 23 Hatsune”, Genji pays “New Year’s calls” on his Rokujo-in ladies, “Tale of Genji: Wakamurasaki” handscroll, “Tale of Genji: Wakamurasaki” album painting, “Genji, yamato-e kagami” printed book by Hishikawa Moronobu, 1685.

    Guided Practice: Students will be given a blank of white paper, pencils, and color pencils to  draw their own image of The Tale of Genji, based on their knowledge of the story, the colors used, and the different images with different scenery.
