Liaoning-gateway.com is a website that focuses on current events taking place in Liaoning, a small to medium-sized state in China's Northeast. Some of this month's headlining topics include the following: "Diamond Mine Discovered in Liaoning," "Actress Yang Mi Attends Promotional Event in Shenyang (Liaoning's capital)," "More Than Six Million Containers Handled at Dalian Harbor (one of China's biggest ports)."
On the left side of the website's home page, a visitor can find several useful links, not just about Liaoning, but about other regions and aspects of China as well. For example, I clicked on a link called "People's Daily," and was brought to what I am presuming to be the official online newspaper covering the entirety of China. What's great about the "People's Daily" is that you get a window into what the Chinese think about the US. For example, an article from today argues that the United States lacks confidence internationally because, unlike in the 90s, there are more big players in today's global economy; the US is still trying to figure out how to properly navigate its relations with other countries. It's probably a fair point!
One thing you won't find on this website are op-ed pieces that give critical opinion about China and it's leaders. Still, the People's Daily does have an opinion section where you can find insightful commentary on the international happenings of the day.
Between these two websites, I enjoyed "People's Daily" a little more than "Liaoning-Gateway," mainly because "People's Daily" reads more like a US newspaper. Ironically, one of the things I enjoyed about reading article's in the "People's Daily" is that the English is a little off at times. The sometimes quirky English helps to add to the authenticity that these articles are written in Chinese and then later translated into English.
