I liked this lesson for many reasons. There are many relevant discussions that can come out of this lesson for young children. English language letters and characters contrasted with the Japanese characters, and also the opportunity for the students to share and practice speaking in front of the class. It is also useful as you mentioned for other languages and characters in writing and expression as well.

My students would enjoy learning the characters.

These lessons are designed to be taught around the Lunar New Year. There is a lesson about Japan, Korea, and China.
    Enjoy!

(I edited this to change the subject to lunar new year lesson plans, it's best if everyone names their lesson plans something other than "lesson plans" or "curriculum unit." - cd)
