During the presentation, he discussed wanting to focus on Taiwan as peacemakers and humanitarians in various aspects. He stated multiple times that he hoped to maintain "status quo" and that was brought up by the local scholars and the audience. He continuously linked the USA and Taiwan, economic interests, and discussed Taiwan and Japan's relationship (briefly) in regards to post WW2.

President Ma's presentation was very dynamic. He commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII and focused a lot of attention on the U.S.-R.O.C. relationship. The question-and-answer session following his presentation with leading professors was particularly interesting and informative. I feel I have a better understanding of current relations regarding the South China Sea and Taiwan's position. There was some discussion and concern about whether the "status quo" will be maintained after Ma's presidency. Finally, I felt honored to be there and surprised that recognition was given to not only the distinguished guests but to the teachers going on the study tour.

For any who attended the event Tuesday evening at UCLA, what did the president of Taiwan discuss? What questions was he asked? How did he answer? What did the local scholars have to say?
