There is an interesting article in November's "National Geographic" about a revolution that is going on in Nepal. Apparently, more than 31% of the people in Nepal live far below the poverty level. In the last few years the King of Nepal has been cracking down on any insurgencies or political dissent. A communist faction has risen that is resisting the King. They call themselves the "Maoist"; after the Chinese revolutionary leader. They stand for the empowerment of the disenfranchised and the overthrow of the autocratic regime in Nepal. It seems that the Maoist have control over much of the country side in Nepal. However, they use any means necessary to gain control and force loyalty to their cause. Innocent people have been killed and extortion like tactics are being used by both sides. This has forced much of the intelligensia in Nepal to flee the country.
It is just interesting to see that even though communism has been proven to be a failed ideology that there still is a re-emergrence when there are poor and powerless people. I am curious about what is the fate of communism? Will we start to more countries turn to communism as the gap between the poor and the rich starts to widen? Any thoughts?
