    Agnes,

I enjoyed reading your lesson plan on cultural diffusion. What about this for your hook???

Can you show a video of a Karaoke festival? Then perhaps play some music and project the lyrics and have the students sign along? That would at least get their attention.

I am a big fan of "hands on"......

Could you bring in a cup of noodles, sushi and rice.....kids could see and sample -- food always seems to get kids to focus.

This lesson plan is a collaboration among history teachers and resource teacher at Barack Obama Global Preparation Academy. My responsibility is Lesson 1.

Agnes, I agree it is an excellent lesson plan. It ties in perfectly with our Medieval Japan Culminating task. I have struggled for several years on how to teach cultural diffusion to the students in an engaging manner. The realia and pictures you will bring in such as sushi and karaoke will definitely allow students to develop personal connections with the term cultural diffusion. I would also add a reflection piece where students can reflect on how they are affected by cultural diffusion in their daily lives.
